2015 Rakuten buys ebook and audiobook platform OverDrive

Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten got into the e-reader game шт 2011 when it picked up hardware maker Kobo for $315 million. And now it acquired ebook and audiobook marketplace OverDrive for $410 million. OverDrive, that offers over 2.5 million titles from more than 5,000 publishers, will be put to work providing greater choice and reading material for Kobo owners. OverDrive’s deep content library and relationships with publishers, libraries, schools, and retailers will allow Rakuten to extend our mission of empowerment to new market segments. Interestingly, Rakuten claimed that the addition of OverDrive — which is expected to close next month — will push its eBook business “close to breakeven” before the end of this year. That’s thanks to OverDrive financials, which included end of year (EBITDA) revenue of $25 million for 2014.

2014 OverDrive launches international Read an Ebook day

September 18 will mark the first International Read an eBook Day, an annual holiday to celebrate and raise awareness for reading on digital devices. In recent years, the popularity of eBooks has soared, with 28 percent of adults aged 18 and older reading at least one eBook in 2013, according to Pew Research. Readers can access eBooks on any mobile device, computer or tablet, anytime, anywhere. Throughout September 18, OverDrive will be celebrating the holiday by giving away tablets and devices every hour on www.readanebookday.com and through social media to readers who tell their story of what eBooks mean to them. Readers around the world are encouraged to take part in the largest digital reading event by choosing from millions of free eBooks from their local library or purchasing an eBook from a retailer online.
