Paperpile vs Sciwheel
August 21, 2025 | Author: Laura Candler
Paperpile and Sciwheel are both software for managing bibliographies - an ordered lists of sources used in writing a scientific paper, book, article or report. They work as web applications with cloud storage and provide browser plugins, integration with text editors, customization of citation styles. Both programs support import from PubMed, Google Scholar and other online databases.
But Paperpile is focused on working with Google Docs (and Google's ecosystem in general). It provides a Chrome extension with a simple and minimalistic interface, can automatically update PDFs from publishing sites and is aimed at individual users.
Sciwheel works well with both Google Docs and Word (via a plugin) and focuses on teamwork. Unlike Paperpile, it has a built-in PDF notes and annotation editor, article and PDF search, collections and shortcuts for organization, integration with LabArchives, specialized features for teachers and students
