Scribd
Scribd is the world's largest digital library, where readers can discover books and written works of all kinds on the Web or any mobile device and publishers and authors can find a voracious audience for their work. Launched in March of 2007 and based in San Francisco California, more than 40 million books and documents have been contributed to Scribd by the community. Scribd content reaches and audience of 80 million people around the world every month.
Bookmate and Scribd are both ebook subscription services. They are available online and in a mobile app (for different platforms), which provides the ability to read offline, add bookmarks and notes. In addition to the reader, they allow you to discover new books, generate personal recommendations.

But Bookmate is originally a Russian service that focuses on social functions (there is a friends feed, comments). It has a large catalog of literature (and audiobooks) in Russian, but there is also content in other languages. The reader functionality supports custom fonts and styles, the ability to upload your own books, access to user selections. Basically, all books on the service are available via paid subscription, but the availability of 50,000 free books is advertised.

Scribd is an English-language service that, in addition to books, contains magazines, documents and articles. It operates in a wider number of countries. All content on Scribd is available for free, it allows you to embed the reader on any site, similar to how YouTube allows you to publish videos. However, Scribd inserts a lot of advertising into any content and offers to purchase a paid subscription.
