Latest news about Ebook Creation software

30.01.24. Book writing software Dabble makes it easier to create characters

Dabble has released a new version with enhanced character and cast creation feature. Now authors can craft intricate backstories, define relationships and visualize cast with our new Cast and Characters features. You can now set up property lists in Notes and Characters to keep track of all the important details, mark your editing progress, scenes to come back to, or important notes by changing their icons, create and reuse your own character templates easily. Just like Character Templates, you can create a template for your scenes and scene notes. Perfect for following along with writing courses or setting up your scenes in the perfect way. Notes can have banners now. Whether it's a magical ring or a flaming volcano, you can visualize what your note is more easily. And just like Characters and Scenes, you can create various note templates. Besides, now you can print notes directly from Dabble quickly and easily. No more messing about with exporting first.

2023. Dabble now allows to add book covers and in-book images

Dabble, the software for fiction writing, has released its latest version, 2.3. A notable addition is the ability to include a front cover image for your Dabble book. This image will be displayed prominently at the top of your Project, occupying the initial space. Furthermore, you now have the option to insert full-page images within or between chapters, add title images to chapters and parts, as well as incorporate images in a scene or note. Alongside these updates, Dabble users can now selectively share their Book, Part, Chapter, or Scene with specific readers using the new Share to Web feature. By generating a unique link tied to the specific version of their writing, authors can distribute a read-only copy via email to their chosen recipients. In addition, users now have the ability to assign labels and color codes to Note Cards (including Plot Points and Scenes) using ribbons. Moreover, developers have streamlined the process of linking to different sections within your Book or Plot Grids directly from within a Note Card, making navigation within your Project more effortless.

2023. Reedsy Marketplace adds Projects section for book collaboration

The Reedsy Marketplace has gone through a rather magnificent transformation, rather like a spaceship that suddenly realizes it's actually a supremely organized office. Beneath its sleek new exterior, a host of behind-the-scenes improvements hum quietly, making the entire experience feel as friendly and manageable as a well-trained towel. If you’re in the throes of working with a Reedsy professional—whether by flinging requests, haggling over offers, or hatching a book together—rejoice! You can now manage all these thrilling exchanges under the effortlessly labeled Projects tab. The whole system has been neatly reassembled to handle multiple projects without so much as a murmur, ensuring you can track everything—requests, collaborations, payments, and file sharing—with nary a bead of perspiration. To uncover every secret of your collaborations, simply click the cunning little arrow on the Manage button, which is almost as satisfying as opening a bag of your favorite snack. File sharing has reached new heights of simplicity, too: now you can toss files into messages with a graceful drag-and-drop flourish. And when you need to revisit your shared treasures, you’ll find every file from your exchanges snuggled up on your Files page, waiting patiently to be rediscovered.

2023. Vellum improves search and start-up window

Ebook Editing software for Mac, Vellum, has whimsically decided to embrace the concept of "better" by rolling out a slew of updates that are equal parts clever and unapologetically useful. The Find Bar, now positively enlightened, can locate words even if they're audacious enough to sport apostrophes, quotes, or ellipses, as though it had finally decided that punctuation was worth acknowledging. The Startup Window, no longer content with its modest existence, now boldly showcases up to 100 recent files, allowing users to pin their darlings to the top, like celestial constellations of productivity. Scene breaks? Naturally, you can now dictate their existence at the top or bottom of the page, which is sure to delight control enthusiasts everywhere. The Text Editor grumbles less, offering a broader space for editing, while undoing mistakes now feels more like magic, affecting whole words instead of dainty single letters. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Custom Heading Background Presence has graduated to number form (how modern!), subheads have infiltrated the Logical TOC (or NCX, for acronym aficionados), and the Keep with Next feature has upped its game in sheer functionality, likely to much applause.

2023. Top 5 software for book writers

Writing a book can be a daunting task, but with the right software, the process can be much easier and more efficient. Let's take a look at the top five software for book writers, each designed to make the process of writing a book more manageable. ***

2023. Reedsy adds cats to its Writing App

It is a truth universally acknowledged – or at least whispered among the scattered tea mugs of literary history – that the likes of Stephen King, Doris Lessing, Jorge Luis Borges, Alice Walker, and even the ever-so-clever Mark Twain drew their musings from a singularly profound source: cats. Yes, cats, those enigmatic furballs of inspiration, whose only real competition for universal domination is probably gravity. Now, thanks to the marvelously quirky minds behind the Reedsy Book Editor, aspiring scribes can bask in the same feline wisdom with the whimsical "Reedsy Cats" feature. Simply toggle CAT mode, and voila! A digital cat saunters into your workspace, lounging, licking, and purring with a studied indifference that only a true muse could master, as you chip away at your daily word count goals. Because nothing quite says “productive genius” like being outpaced by a virtual cat’s napping schedule.

2023. Sigil now allows to edit Checkpoint descriptions

Free open-source EPUB editor Sigil has released a new version. In this release a variety of bug fixes and new features have been introduced. The update includes the ability for users to edit Checkpoint descriptions for clarity via the Checkpoint menu and to show the Checkpoint Change Log via the same menu. The release also includes an update to Hunspell 1.7.2 for improved spellchecking and the latest version of zlib-1.2.13 for enhanced security. Additionally, Sigil has moved away from using the OS system tmp folder for storing Sigil work-in-progress files and instead created a new “workspace” folder inside the Sigil Preferences folder. Finally, the update also includes the new feature of being able to preview and print contents of Sigil's Preview window. Sigil for Linux users are notified that MathJax 3.2.2+ is now required to render MathML in Sigil’s Preview Window.

2023. Manuskript now allows to track writing goals

In the far-flung reaches of the digital cosmos, where writers dwell in a haze of coffee fumes and existential musings, the free open-source tool Manuskript has unveiled its new incarnation, Version 0.15. A cornucopia of features has descended upon its users, like manna from coding heaven: now you can set writing targets for your current session, thereby allowing you to measure your progress—or procrastination—with ruthless precision. The drag-and-drop wizardry of the outline view now opens items in one writing panel, turning your multi-panel struggles into a streamlined dance of textual efficiency. The UI, which once mumbled in tongues, now speaks more fluently in a host of new languages, its translations consistent and polished to a gleaming sheen. Bugs have been evicted, their eviction notices pinned to fully translated strings, and the keyboard shortcuts? They’ve finally stopped arguing with your language settings, restoring peace to the land. Available on Windows, Mac, and Linux, Manuskript continues to be the intergalactic hitchhiker’s guide to wordsmithing.

2023. Which writing software do famouse authors use?

Writing is one of those curious human activities that, much like trying to play the bagpipes underwater or attempting to fold fitted sheets, demands a particular blend of creativity, stubbornness and sheer, mind-boggling persistence. Consider, for a moment, Hemingway and Rowling—both famous authors, both having spent years tinkering with words like they were trying to fix a very delicate toaster. Yes, even the greats need help to turn their meandering thoughts into coherent sentences. And that’s where writing software comes in. In a world where even your smart fridge can write poetry (not particularly good poetry, but still), it's only natural that writers would embrace technology to streamline their work. So let’s have a whimsical journey into the strange, glowing world of the digital quills these authors wield. ***

2022. Vellum 3.4 enables export books to Word

In the unendingly peculiar realm of ebook formatting, where chaos and fonts collide, the arrival of Vellum 3.4 is akin to discovering an extra slice of cake at the end of a very long and exhausting dinner party. Not only can you now hurl your meticulously crafted Word documents into Vellum’s welcoming embrace, but you can also, quite astonishingly, fling them back out again as polished Word files using the remarkably named "Export Content" command, found lurking in the File menu. Meanwhile, the new Written Note feature provides an eerily delightful way to insert heartfelt, possibly tear-streaked, notes from your characters, complete with customizable parts and an array of font options ranging from "handwritten elegance" to "dystopian scrawl." And then, as if to truly seal the deal, the Text Conversation feature allows you to inject formatted text message banter into your book, complete with options for sent and received messages and six—count them, six!—distinct styles, ensuring your narrative reaches unprecedented levels of interactivity and sheer conversational pizzazz.

2022. Sigil adds user templates

Open-source Ebook Editing software Sigil has released version 1.9.20, which includes several new features. Users can now create new empty xhtml and css files from a user-template.xhtml and user-template.css and the latest version of MathJax (3.2.2) has been added for mathml support in Preview. Additionally, users can now cycle through two different custom stylesheets (or none at all) for use with Preview and the FindReplace dialog user interface has been redesigned to minimize size while adding features. Other new features include a FindReplace "Text" only checkbox and support to exclude tags from search, a Toggle Line Wrap Mode and its support added to CodeView via pop-up menu, a Dry Run Replace dialog to act as "Replace All" what if (Shift + Count All), a Replacement filter dialog to allow users to delete unwanted replacements before applying Replace All (Shift + Replace All) and a Counts Report to Saved Searches to show Saved Search Group counts by search.

2022. Storyist adds support for right-to-left languages

In a galaxy not entirely unlike our own, the latest incarnation of the Mac OS tool for scribes of the grand narrative arts, Storyist 4.2.6, has made its debut with a host of enhancements designed to tickle the fancy of even the most particular of wordsmiths. Among its triumphs is a Writing Direction menu option hidden away in the Format > Text menu—perfect for those moments when you need your words to elegantly stroll from right to left in languages like Arabic or Hebrew. Meanwhile, strikethrough aficionados can now gleefully obliterate text with surgical precision by navigating the labyrinthine Format - Font - Show Fonts path and activating the fabled Strikethrough button. And, as a cherry on this proverbial software sundae, Storyist now plays nicely with Apple Books, gracefully exporting ePub files that won’t cause the app to throw its digital toys out of the pram over pesky HTML character restrictions in metadata. All in all, quite a feat of coding wizardry!

2022. LivingWriter brings its mobile apps in line with our web/desktop versions

LivingWriter mobile app for iOS/Android was created as a companion app for quick on-the-go writing, so it’s missing quite a few features available on our web/desktop versions. But with new upgrade, the mobile app will be updated to include ALL the features of our web/desktop versions. The new version also includes a fresh new (but not unfamiliar) design with the latest UI/UX technology and a zippier interface, in addition to various customization options. Added layers of security like 2FA and password locks on stories/folders are coming soon. With more export options added and the ability to produce Kindle-Ready and KDP formatted files. The new Device Preview feature will allow you to see your book across multiple devices. Along with this, LivingWriter has also redesigned sharing feature with tools such as tracking changes, live collaboration, live commenting and more.

2022. Squibler adds editable corkboard

In the vast, sprawling realm of writing tools, where organization is often as elusive as a cup of perfectly brewed tea, the Squibler platform has cheerfully unveiled some features that could make even the most scatterbrained writer grin. Chief among them is a corkboard feature—a sort of celestial map for your ideas—now equipped with editable summaries. Yes, previously you had to wander off to the right sidebar to tweak summaries, but now, like magic (or efficient coding), you can do it right on the corkboard itself. If that wasn’t enough to make you toss your towel in delight, there’s a new files and folders structure so vast and adaptable it could probably house the works of an entire Vogon poetry committee. Unlimited hierarchies of files and folders now dance at your fingertips, perfect for everyone from technical writers to screenplay dreamers. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, along comes the trash functionality—a small, smugly satisfied tool that lets you delete and recover files or folders directly from the editor, a marked improvement from the previous dashboard-only approach. All in all, a delightfully practical update for the galaxy’s aspiring scribes!

2022. ProWritingAid enables Scrivener proofreading

Scrivener, that ever-so-clever toolkit for writers who enjoy organizing their thoughts into a dazzling labyrinth of digital index cards, does indeed come with its own spelling and grammar checkers for Mac and Windows. But, as with many well-meaning inventions, they occasionally fall short of perfection, like a robot that makes tea but forgets the biscuits. Enter the shining hero of text refinement: ProWritingAid. This splendidly meticulous grammar checker works harmoniously with Scrivener, both online and on desktop, offering a symphony of precise grammar suggestions. The process is delightfully simple—select a file in the Binder, and voilà! ProWritingAid gets to work, displaying its corrections like a traffic controller with a penchant for good prose. Accept, ignore, or banish the rule that triggered each suggestion; it’s all in your hands. Stumble across an unknown word marked as a spelling error? Add it to your personal dictionary, and the word shall never be hassled again. Save your changes when you’re done, and your project is polished, prim, and properly sorted. Tea and biscuits optional.

2022. FocusWriter - distraction-free open-source writing software

In the vast and uncharted reaches of the writer’s mind, where distractions abound and focus is as elusive as a towel in a Vogon bureaucracy, there exists a peculiar marvel called FocusWriter. This ingenious contraption, clearly devised by beings who understand the importance of not being seen until absolutely necessary, cunningly conceals its interface, revealing itself only when one ventures to the edges of the screen—a bit like a shy yet helpful penguin. Compatible with Linux and Windows (and possibly the distant planet of Txt), it graciously supports TXT, basic RTF, and basic ODT formats, ensuring compatibility with most intelligible civilizations. It doesn’t stop there: with timers, alarms, customizable themes, typewriter sound effects, live stats, spell-checking, multi-document support, and daily goals, it practically throws itself into the air screaming, “I’m versatile!” Available in over 20 languages and boasting a portable mode for writers who wander, FocusWriter is, in essence, the Babel fish of distraction-free writing environments.

2021. Vellum 3.0 brings cool ebook templates

Vellum 3.0 has been released, offering new and exciting options for book styling. With 24 different styles, including 16 new designs, users can now customize their books in countless ways. Each style has multiple configurations available and a brand new browser for styles has been added with new categories to help users find the perfect match for their story. Full-bleed heading backgrounds have also been added, allowing users to add a rich background behind the beginning of each chapter in their print edition. Vellum provides six illustrated backgrounds, but users can also upload their own custom background. Users can also create Saved Styles to easily reuse a configuration for future books in a series.

2021. Writing app Dabble has gone mobile

Fiction writing service Dabble now has mobile support which enables writers to work on their novel anytime, anywhere. Unlike other apps that are delivered through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, Dabble is accessible through a regular website and can be installed on your phone’s home screen for advanced support, just like a native app. To install it on an iPhone, you simply navigate to Dabble’s website, click the share button at the bottom and choose Add to Home Screen. Android users can use the button in the URL bar to do the same. The Web App is able to function offline and sync with the server whenever it goes online, just like on desktop. All of the features you enjoy on desktop are available on mobile.

2021. yWriter - free software for novel writers

In the great tapestry of writing tools, yWriter shines as a small yet spectacular hitchhiker's guide for novelists. Crafted with the precision of a Vogon constructor fleet (but far more pleasant), it offers an ingenious platform for wrangling your story into chapters and scenes without succumbing to the chaos of your own brilliance. Its interface is as welcoming as a well-stocked tea cupboard and as flexible as Zaphod Beeblebrox's moral compass, featuring word counts, character dossiers, location notes, and scene summaries to ensure you don’t lose track of where (or when) your plot’s space-time continuum is headed. For the procrastinatory-at-heart, there's even a goal-setting function to prod you into writing action—like Marvin being reluctantly inspired to save the day. It syncs seamlessly with Dropbox, so you can float your novel across devices without the intergalactic nightmare of misplaced progress. Oh, and for the truly mobile, the Android app lets you scribble genius on the go, whether you're at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe or just a local coffee shop. Delightfully, it’s free, though registering your copy is a lovely way to say thanks to this digital companion that’s almost as helpful as a towel.

2021. Ebook editor Manuskript improves search and spell-checker

The latest iteration of Manuskript (0.12) has crash-landed into our reality, bristling with shiny new bells, whistles and the occasional pleasant hum of efficiency. Among its many tricks, the upgraded search functionality now lets you ferret out words and cryptic regular expressions across every nook and cranny of your masterpiece—plot, world, characters, and outline—all while brandishing customizable shortcuts and a magical mouse-hover preview. LanguageTool integration has been summoned to serve as your multi-lingual grammar genie, while a new logging system stands by, diligently documenting every hiccup for your debugging pleasure. Meanwhile, the editor’s newfound ability to conjure characters, world items, and plot points with the flick of a metaphorical wand (and evict them from POV selection dialogues just as easily) is nothing short of wizardry. To top it all, the distraction-free mode now has a homing instinct for your primary monitor, and the ID system has undergone a personality overhaul to curb its crash-prone tendencies.
