Calibre vs Freda

Calibre and Freda are both free, cross-platform apps for reading e-books. They support ePub, offer customizable text display, bookmarks, text search and allow to organize your e-library.

However, Calibre is an open-source desktop app for Windows, Linux and Mac and is primarily a powerful e-library manager rather than a reader. It can convert books between dozens of formats, edit metadata, ebook text and cover, has a built-in server for accessing the library via a browser and supports numerous plugins for expanding its built-in functionality. As for the reader, it's primarily used for viewing books, but unlike Freda, it allows to open not only EPUB, but any other formats, like comics and PDFs.

Freda is EPUB-focused reader available on Windows and Android smartphones and tablets. Its key feature is integration with online catalogs and the ability to read books directly from the cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox). You can upload your own books or read over 50,000 public domain classic books from Gutenberg and other on-line catalogs. It has a more pleasant interface with flexible theme customization. It also has a very useful read-aloud feature.
