Calibre
Calibre is a free, open-source program (written in Python) for managing e-book libraries on Windows, Mac and Linux. It offers the most rich set of features, divided into the following main categories: library management, e-book conversion, synchronization with e-readers, downloading news from the internet and converting them to e-book formats, e-book viewer-reader, e-book editor and a content server for web access to your book collection. The program reorganizes book files into own structure. There are numerous plugins developed for the program by the community. However, many find the interface cluttered and unwieldy.

Readerware
Library management program for Windows/Mac/Linux with mobile apps for iOS and Android. It allows to enter a list of ISBNs, LCCNs or scanned barcodes, then automatically searches the internet and downloads book information, including cover images. The program can combine information from multiple websites to create the most comprehensive database. The built-in search allows to filter books by Author, Title, ISBN and Category. Search results are displayed in an easy-to-read, customizable table, tree or thumbnail view. You can easily manage your database, categorize your collection, assign ratings and add custom database fields. Readerware includes built-in book lending tracker to register book issues and returns, search and print list of books currently on loan and expired. The program discontinued.
Calibre vs Readerware in our news:

2025. Book collection software Readerware is no longer available for order

ReaderWare is discontinuing their product line, including the book collection software. The new product orders are already blocked, while existing users may still order product upgrades. Readerware is a desktop+mobile software with auto-catalog, reports, integrated loan tracker, backup & restore, import/export and more. It enabled to take your databases with you on your iPhone, iPad or Android device and use your mobile device as a barcode scanner. The Client/Server version added support for multiple users, external databases and the loan client is an additional client program for circulation management.

2018. Calibre added support for the Kindle Paperwhite 4

Ebook management software Calibre has introduced support for the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 4. This means your device will now be recognized by the program, allowing you to transfer documents, ebooks, manga, PDF files and various other content directly to your Paperwhite. Additional new features include metadata plugboards (which allow the definition of plugboards that also modify comments metadata) and a new keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+M) in the E-book viewer for switching between paged and flow mode. Calibre is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. It offers extensive metadata support, so if an ebook you downloaded from the internet has the book title listed instead of the author, or is missing cover art, this can be easily corrected with a few clicks.
