July 30, 2023 | Author: Dhaval Parekh
One significant advantage of autonomous e-readers is their ability to offer an uninterrupted and distraction-free reading experience. These specialized devices operate independently without the need for constant internet connectivity or other external devices. As a result, readers can enjoy their literary journey without notifications, social media distractions, or pop-up ads that are common on multi-functional devices like smartphones and tablets. Autonomous e-readers typically have e-ink displays, which mimic the appearance of real paper, reducing eye strain and providing a comfortable reading experience for extended periods. Moreover, these e-readers have impressive battery life, allowing readers to indulge in their favorite books for weeks on a single charge. With a dedicated focus on reading, autonomous e-readers enable users to escape into the world of literature without interruptions, promoting focused, mindful reading and ultimately enhancing the joy of reading for book enthusiasts.

Some of the most popular autonomous e-readers are listed below.

2022. New basic Kindle offers premium Paperwhite features for under $100

Amazon has introduced a new 6-inch Kindle that is hailed as its "lightest and most compact" e-reader yet. Although it joins Amazon's regular Kindle lineup, its specifications align more closely with the $139.99 Paperwhite model. It incorporates several features from the premium lineup, including a high-resolution display of 300ppi for sharp text and graphics, a dark mode, and USB-C charging. Notable improvements include a battery life lasting up to six weeks per charge, 16GB of storage (twice the capacity of its 2019 predecessor), and the return of the adjustable front light. Impressively, this new Kindle is priced at just $99.99, a mere $10 increase from the previous generation, making it an enticing option for those seeking an upgrade from older models that lost the ability to browse, borrow, or purchase books directly from the Kindle Store last month.

2022. Kobo software update adds Sideloaded mode

Kobo has released firmware version 4.31, which is a relatively minor update focusing on language support and bug fixes, while also aiming to enhance battery life for the Kobo Sage. Interestingly, one notable addition not mentioned in the release notes is the introduction of Sideloaded Mode, enabling users to utilize a Kobo ereader without the need for signing in. This feature was brought to attention by Davidfor at MobileRead, who provided an explanation of its functionality. Typically, Kobo updates are automatically downloaded and installed during syncing, but they are rolled out gradually, so it may take a few weeks before all users receive the update.

2018. Onyx Boox Euclid 9.7 inch e-reader is now available

The Onyx Boox Euclid is an innovative 9.7-inch e-reader equipped with a front-lit display and powered by Android 6.0. Featuring an E Ink Carta screen with the MOON Light system, SNOW Field function, and touch control, this device is an excellent choice for individuals who frequently engage with academic or technical literature. With its spacious and eye-friendly display, complete with lighting, and a robust quad-core 1.6GHz processor coupled with 1GB of RAM, it provides optimal tools for reading PDF and DjVu files. The built-in Wi-Fi module allows for full Internet browsing, and the pre-installed Google Play store significantly expands its functionality by granting access to a wide array of third-party Android applications, including free ones. The low power consumption of E Ink displays, combined with a 3000 mAh battery capacity, provides up to a month of autonomous usage. This new e-reader is priced at $379.

2015. Kobo launches the Touch 2.0 eReader

Kobo has recently introduced its second new e-reader of the year, the Kobo Touch 2.0. This updated version revamps the four-year-old Kobo Touch with enhanced features such as increased storage, extended battery life, a faster CPU, and a more affordable price. With a 1GHz CPU, 4GB storage, and Wi-Fi connectivity, the Kobo Touch 2.0 is positioned as a competitor to the basic Kindle, lacking audio capabilities and a card slot. The 6" screen boasts a resolution of 800 x 600 and an IR touchscreen, although it lacks a frontlight. Set to be available on September 9 in the US and Canada, the Kobo Touch 2.0 will retail for $89.99. However, we believe that for just $40 more, opting for the Kobo Glo HD would be a better value proposition, as it offers a significantly sharper screen and includes a frontlight.
