2025. Sigil 2.5 improved performance on Windows, Linux and Mac

The new version Sigil 2.5 represents a large set of bug fixes and new features. The most significant of these is the addition of an AppImage build of Sigil for Linux that is feature for feature equal to the builds we make for MacOS and Windows. New Features include MacOS, Windows and Linux AppImage updates to support latest QT, Python and pcre2 search engine. Developers have added ability to easily clear an Open With editor list, without need to edit ini files, new Search menu option that will hide the Find and Replace Window if open, resizable Alert Boxes to better see error messages, “Use Standard File Extensions” tool with menu and automator tool support. GetInfo feature was extended to all BookBrowser file types. For unnamed epubs Save-As now suggests a new name based on epub’s metadata.

2023. Vellum improves search and start-up window

Ebook Editing software for Mac, Vellum, has whimsically decided to embrace the concept of "better" by rolling out a slew of updates that are equal parts clever and unapologetically useful. The Find Bar, now positively enlightened, can locate words even if they're audacious enough to sport apostrophes, quotes, or ellipses, as though it had finally decided that punctuation was worth acknowledging. The Startup Window, no longer content with its modest existence, now boldly showcases up to 100 recent files, allowing users to pin their darlings to the top, like celestial constellations of productivity. Scene breaks? Naturally, you can now dictate their existence at the top or bottom of the page, which is sure to delight control enthusiasts everywhere. The Text Editor grumbles less, offering a broader space for editing, while undoing mistakes now feels more like magic, affecting whole words instead of dainty single letters. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Custom Heading Background Presence has graduated to number form (how modern!), subheads have infiltrated the Logical TOC (or NCX, for acronym aficionados), and the Keep with Next feature has upped its game in sheer functionality, likely to much applause.

2022. Storyist adds support for right-to-left languages

In a galaxy not entirely unlike our own, the latest incarnation of the Mac OS tool for scribes of the grand narrative arts, Storyist 4.2.6, has made its debut with a host of enhancements designed to tickle the fancy of even the most particular of wordsmiths. Among its triumphs is a Writing Direction menu option hidden away in the Format > Text menu—perfect for those moments when you need your words to elegantly stroll from right to left in languages like Arabic or Hebrew. Meanwhile, strikethrough aficionados can now gleefully obliterate text with surgical precision by navigating the labyrinthine Format - Font - Show Fonts path and activating the fabled Strikethrough button. And, as a cherry on this proverbial software sundae, Storyist now plays nicely with Apple Books, gracefully exporting ePub files that won’t cause the app to throw its digital toys out of the pram over pesky HTML character restrictions in metadata. All in all, quite a feat of coding wizardry!

2021. yWriter - free software for novel writers

In the great tapestry of writing tools, yWriter shines as a small yet spectacular hitchhiker's guide for novelists. Crafted with the precision of a Vogon constructor fleet (but far more pleasant), it offers an ingenious platform for wrangling your story into chapters and scenes without succumbing to the chaos of your own brilliance. Its interface is as welcoming as a well-stocked tea cupboard and as flexible as Zaphod Beeblebrox's moral compass, featuring word counts, character dossiers, location notes, and scene summaries to ensure you don’t lose track of where (or when) your plot’s space-time continuum is headed. For the procrastinatory-at-heart, there's even a goal-setting function to prod you into writing action—like Marvin being reluctantly inspired to save the day. It syncs seamlessly with Dropbox, so you can float your novel across devices without the intergalactic nightmare of misplaced progress. Oh, and for the truly mobile, the Android app lets you scribble genius on the go, whether you're at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe or just a local coffee shop. Delightfully, it’s free, though registering your copy is a lovely way to say thanks to this digital companion that’s almost as helpful as a towel.

2020. Jutoh improves Mac interface and Epub 3 support

The latest version of Ebook Formatting software Jutoh 3.03 includes a number of new features such as the ability for bibliographies, alphabetical indexes and endnotes to take conditional formatting into account. It has also sped up style operations for multiple table cells, added support for comment author initials in ODT import and export and enabled the exclusion of documents from the word count using tags in the Word Count dialog. Additionally, the software now handles "sub" and "sup" tags in HTML/Epub import and takes into account blank paragraph style names within outline levels in ODT import. New fixed layout configurations are Epub 3 by default and a Mac version for Big Sur on Intel and ARM has been introduced. Other improvements include support for dark mode on Mac and pinch to zoom for the text editor, storyboard document and fixed layout page document.

2017. Scrivener 3 for macOS gets Compile feature

Scrivener 3 for macOS is now available and costs $59.99. The update includes several notable improvements, including a streamlined interface, more flexible and user-friendly book compilation feature and a full-flagged style system. Additionally, users now can view cards in color-themes to track various storylines as well as filter the Corkboard and Planner. Other enhancements include an improved metadata editor, the ability to track daily writing progress using History and a new quick search tool. The Bookmarks feature which replaces Project Notes, Links and Favorites, allows users to easily access frequently used cards. Additionally, users can now turn on the Dialogue Focus feature to search for all dialogue within a text and export formatted text in MultiMarkdown or Pandoc formats. The macOS version features expanded Touch Bar support and rewritten 64-bit codebase, making the program faster and more stable.

2016. Manuskript is now available on Mac OS

In a universe where writers wrestle with chaos and creativity in equal measure, the beloved writing software Manuskript has landed on Mac OS, bringing with it a delightful arsenal of features previously celebrated by Windows users. This ingenious tool is like a galactic organizing companion for scribblers who’d rather plot the trajectory of their magnum opus than flounder in a black hole of disarray. It lets you stack your ideas and snippets in a hierarchically pleasing manner, shuffling them about with the finesse of a Vogon poet rearranging his verse. The snowflake method—undoubtedly the Hitchhiker’s Guide-approved way to turn a nebulous notion into a narrative marvel—prods you gently along with philosophical questions worthy of Deep Thought itself. And as you weave your literary masterpiece, you can keep meticulous tabs on the quirks of your characters, the twists of your plot, and the bewildering settings that you’ve dreamed up. A tool so handy, it might just have been designed by the mice.
